Devon haulier updates fleet for London’s new PSS safety rules

Devon-based S&G Transport has upgraded its fleet to meet new PSS safety regulations for London, working with vehicle safety specialist Durite to stay compliant.
Operating from Hitchcock, just northeast of Exeter, S&G runs a fleet that includes flatbeds, curtainsiders and chiller units, with a strong focus on delivering refrigerated goods into the capital.
With the introduction of the Progressive Safe System (PSS) for HGVs over 12 tonnes in Greater London, the company needed to bring its vehicles in line with the new standards.
S&G, which holds FORS Silver accreditation, opted for camera upgrade kits from Durite to meet the requirements.
“We’d bought beacon lights for our workshop van from Durite in the past and found them very easy to deal with,” said director Stefan Maunder. “We already had cameras on the trucks… Durite were able to quickly identify a solution for us that was very competitive on price.”
The PSS standard builds on previous direct vision requirements and aims to eliminate blind spots by adding indirect vision through cameras and sensors.
“The drivers absolutely love them, which was a nice surprise,” Maunder said. “They tell me that the Durite cameras make manoeuvring much easier, particularly blindside reversing in and around sites.”
S&G even took the extra step of colour-matching the new cameras to their fleet. “We take great pride in the appearance of our fleet,” added Maunder. “We’ve had the cameras painted to match our livery and they look fantastic to be fair.”
Durite’s kits are plug-and-play and supported by a knowledgeable technical team. “They talked us through every step of the process. I would recommend Durite to other hauliers, one hundred percent,” said Maunder.
From May 2025, all non-compliant HGVs over 12 tonnes operating in Greater London risk daily fines of up to £550.
