Davies Crane Hire, based in Carmarthen, has added a new Volvo FH16-780 6×4 tractor unit to its fleet – one of the first of this model to be used in the UK.

Supplied by Truck and Bus Cymru, the FH16-780 comes with a 17-litre Euro 6 step E engine delivering 780 bhp and 3800 Nm of torque. The vehicle will be used to transport a range of heavy loads including cranes, ballast and wind turbines, supporting the company’s day-to-day operations across the UK.

The new truck is expected to be a key part of the company’s operations, particularly when working in challenging locations. The powerful engine and robust build are designed to handle steep gradients and uneven ground with consistency.

The D17 engine features a single turbocharger to improve response and efficiency. Volvo said its wave piston design helps optimise combustion and reduce emissions, while updates to the injection system and higher peak cylinder pressure contribute to better fuel economy and engine performance.

The truck also includes Volvo’s I-Shift transmission, fitted with a crawler and ultra-low crawler gear. These options are intended to improve startability with heavy loads and help reduce clutch wear by up to 75%.

Inside, the Globetrotter cab is equipped with leather upholstery, a microwave, fridge and Volvo’s Drive+ package, which includes electronic air conditioning with air quality sensors, a powered roof hatch and dual armrests.

The FH16-780 joins a 12-strong all-Volvo HGV fleet, arriving alongside a similarly configured FH16-750.

Davies Crane Hire, founded in 1979, operates from four depots in Wales and runs a fleet of cranes ranging from 8 to 650 tonnes.

Owner Malcolm Davies said: “We’ve been buying Volvos for more than 25 years and it’s the customer service that keeps us loyal. The reliability of the trucks is second to none and, even when things go wrong, you can reach someone 24/7 to get the problem sorted as quickly as possible. That back-up is crucial when you’re running a business like ours.”
